Lord Speaker Praises Pioneering Leadership Initiative

Twenty-seven Muslim, Christian and Jewish undergraduate students, who have worked together in 9 teams which included one representative from each faith, attended the June 11 graduation reception at the House of the Lords of the Three Faith Forum's Undergraduate ParliaMentors' programme.

In this year-long programme, the teams are mentored by Members of Parliament while working with non-governmental organisations to create social action projects. The reception also marked the screening of films produced by three students on the Three Faiths Forum DocuMentors programme.

Hosted by Baroness Hayman, the Lord Speaker and a Patron of the Three Faiths Forum, and attended by the MP mentors, the reception showcased the achievements of the participants.

Baroness Hayman told them: "This is a fantastic scheme - there is no substitute for personal contact between individuals. It is essential that deep-rooted learning experiences like this are supported and grown."
In light of last week's election results, she added, "Those of faith and commitment to mutual respect have to fight for their ideals. Every individual can and must make his or her own contribution."

Daniella Shaw-Gabay, Manager of the Undergraduate ParliaMentors & DocuMentors programmes, expressed her delight that the programmes had received warm support and recognition over the last year. The MPs and NGOs taking part had “inspired a new generation of diverse leaders who are already empowering others in their communities and beyond.

“Building on the success of the last two years, we are excited to be offering the ParliaMentors programme to a further forty-five student across the country.”
