Growing together or growing apart?

There was broad consensus that last week's G20 summit was useful but did not have enough impact on global economics.

Mark Ebert, our Executive Director, thinks

one of the causes of the banking crisis is the erosion of guiding moral principles and the world will remain vulnerable until these principles are re-established.

   

There is a danger some community programmes are further separating an already fracturing state.

We brought together City Circle (Muslim) and London Jewish Forum. They got individuals and groups to sign the United London Stands declaration, a commitment to work together to fight Antisemitism, Islamophobia and other forms of hate.

Agreeable disagreement

They started with the death penalty and the weapons trade - and then moved on to the difficult subjects.

Stav Shaffir (Jewish), reflects on last year's Undergraduate ParliaMentors programme. Together with Jonathan Chong (Christian) and Razwan Hussain (Muslim) they looked at the role of modern universities.

   

Meeting others in the middle should not mean leaving ourselves behind. The classroom can be a controlled space in which we can learn how to talk, perhaps even argue, about the differences that make us who we are.

Connecting young Muslims, Christians and Jews
 
    In youth groups

Children from Christchurch Primary and North West London Jewish Day School are taking part in the Shared Futures programme. They taught each other about religious festivals.

Daniel Kerbal says taking part is one of his most fulfilling moments as head teacher.

   

Youth groups from St John the Evangelist church, Edgware Reform Synagogue and a Somali Muslim Youth have met regularly for the past year.

Father John Hawkins says this project has: "created the desire to... live in mutual respect rather than collective fear".

    St Ethelburga's shares advice on interfaith dialogue

In November, England will see its first Interfaith week. There will be exchange visits between places of worship, schools activities and much more. We will run free training and events.
