Statement by Sir Sigmund re Breaking of Ties by the

Chief Rabbinate of Israel with the Vatican

While I understand and share the distress of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel at the Pope's rehabilitation of Bishop William Richardson, a vehement denier of the Holocaust, I regret that the Chief Rabbis have chosen to cut off relations with the Vatican.

As one who has struggled for many years to keep doors open and to pursue the resolution of dispute and conflict by dialogue, I see little merit, whatever the provocation, of freezing a relationship which so clearly needs clarification and discussion.

I hope today's expression by the Pope of his "full and unquestionable solidarity" with the Jewish people and his recall of his own visit to Auschwitz concentration camp will enable the Chief Rabbinate to re-open the dialogue between Jerusalem and Rome.
