Repercussions of the Middle East Crisis: Three Faiths Forum Update

There are many different reactions in the UK to recent events in the Middle East, but citizens can come together in their feelings of frustration and sadness at the loss of innocent lives in the region over these past years.  We must share these frustrations with one another, speaking and letting the other speak, so that we may be attentive to the diversity of opinions, thoughts and feelings about the situation. Such exchanges may indeed complicate our understanding, but will give us a fuller picture of what our neighbours are struggling with.

The Three Faiths Forum continues to initiate dialogues on the subject of the impact of the Middle East on faith relations in the UK, both with single faith organisations and groups of individuals.  For schools, we have developed an educational resource in order to help teachers to approach the subject of the Middle East with care.

It is imperative that any discussions on the Middle East both with young people and with adults are facilitated with awareness, expertise, and sensitivity.  The repercussions of not doing so are too great and will only make the relationships between us that much more tenuous.

Mentoring New book of Faith Cohesion

Former Undergraduate ParliaMentor, Rayyan Mirza, is now part of the newly formed Mentoring Alumni Committee. What began as an opportunity to benefit from the career guidance of an MP became a chance to make a bigger difference. He says:

“ I regard my involvement in the programme as one of the high points of my undergraduate years.  I made good friends, achieved something real, and showed myself as well as a class of young people that at its best, politics really does work.”

In Religious Cohesion in Times of Conflict Andrew Holden presents the results and analysis of the key findings of a sociological investigation which seeks to establish the contribution that Christian-Muslim partnerships can make to community cohesion. He considers the implications of the findings for education policy and faith leadership considering the possible ways forward for Christian-Muslim relations both in Britain and in the international context.
